ANNEALID
The surface of our planet had steadily been growing cold
A frozen, barren wasteland under skies of dimming gold
We were forced below the ground to build our cities far beneath
Ever closer to our planets' center, thriving in its heat
When they arrived, they told us of a wondrous place
A blue-green globe many, many miles away
They brought with them books filled with their histories
Brimming with images of sights we'd never seen
Fire-breathing mountains and forests full of trees
Surrounded by a surging crystal liquid called the sea
Constructions crowned with spires piercing high into the blue
Technology and wires our curiosity grew
The most adventurous among us did not hesitate
We climbed aboard the Earthling ships intent to emigrate
They promised us a better life of warmth and much tranquility
They told us things that seemed like truth but we were too naive
How were we to know that those years we'd spent on Earth would end up crushing our spirits?
How were we to know that those years we'd spent on Earth would end up destroying our families?
How were we to know that those years we'd spent on Earth would teach us all the meaning of hate?
How were we to know that those years we'd spent on Earth would have us crawling on our knees?
We obeyed all their restrictions
We swallowed all of their prescriptions
We went along with their decisions
We voted for their politicians
How were we to know that we'd be used to fulfill their delusional, god-complex fantasies?
How were we to know we'd be reduced to freaks of nature performing on stage?
How were we to know that we'd be used to try to fix the problems of their dying world?
How were we to know we'd be reduced to pigs for slaughter living in a cage?
We prayed to all of their religions
We served in their combat conscriptions
We allowed all their inspections
We injected all their poisons
We should never have allowed them to set foot on our planet that day

Novae Terrae

SCIENTIST
This was an opportunity
That I could not ignore
The dream of every scientist
To chart the unexplored
When we left the Earth to begin the search
For a way to heal our dying world
Through induced sleep dreams came to me
Of all the things that we might see
When I had opened my eyes
Such unbelievable sights
Beneath my feet there lay
Novae terrae
COMMANDER
Citizens! Fate hangs in the balance
We've dispatched space-crafts to charter other planets
There's no other hope, the Earth is expiring
The Scientists are called to divulge all their findings
No stone unturned, no thing left to chance
The answer's out here in the great expanse
ANNEALID
We watched as they came
Earth ships descending
Should we be afraid?
Or do they come in peace?
SCIENTIST
We spent months digging in the frozen ground
Without any answers to be found
Until the day I heard a sound
And saw it there when I turned around
It stared at me, it seemed to grin
Neon veins beneath a crystalline skin
Like the bioluminescence of a deep-sea squid
We called them the Annealids
They showed us how they communicate
They flooded words into our minds
We asked them back to Earth with us
They trusted us, we seemed so kind
We bragged of our hospitality
Boasting with such Earthly pride
Looking back, now I see
Shamefully, that we had lied

Unwelcome

|

COMMANDER
How long is it since
We first invited the Annealids?
A portent of providence none could deny
So we let down our guard and laid open our skies
We offered employment and lodging and peace
Yet our people starve whilst their numbers increase
A handful at first, then with blink of an eye
Our once-sovereign planet had been occupied
I’ll protect my people, or die in disgrace!
Homo sapiens will not be replaced
Gather our forces, the time is at hand
Erase this invasive species once and for all from our lands
SCIENTIST
There must be a peaceful way to solve this
One without any senseless violence
ANNEALID
We were brought here as your guests
But now we're treated as ugly pests
COMMANDER
This is an unlawful assembly
Return to your homes or prepare to be dealt with stringently
ANNEALID
Enough is enough!
ANNEALID, COMMANDER & SCIENTIST
Enough is enough!
ANNEALID
We tried to reason
You would not listen
Your flamethrowers, aimed right at us
You tried to burn us, but you can't burn us
You tried to kill us, but that won't kill us
Your flamethrowers, won't work on us

COMMANDER
How can this be?!
I can't believe...
Swallowed in flame
Yet still they breathe!
I have a plan
Bring me the head of the science branch
Scientist! Come forth! Rally your research team
The time has come to do what must be done
Let it be known, and so let no man sleep
Until the secret of the skin has been unsealed
(Keyboard solo: “What the Fire Divulged”)
SCIENTIST
Experiments have just confirmed
The flesh of the Annealid will never burn
Deep within their tissue we have uncovered
Some elements previously undiscovered
COMMANDER
How could we have been so blind
It's been right there in front of us th'entire time
Give me your hand child, look in my eye
Hear me now as I say
We must swear to do th'unpleasant things
That will lead us to solutions we've been striving to uncover
No place for questioning, we'll bring them in for medical attention
That's the red herring to fleece their crystalline flesh
SCIENTIST
We must not do this
COMMANDER
What other choice do we have?
SCIENTIST
They’ve a right to exist
COMMANDER
The only hope for earth-folk to defeat the heat is skin of the Annealids
SCIENTIST
These beings are alive
This is genocide!
COMMANDER
Nothing less than neverending blue skies, divined for us
By the power of the blue hide
We'll survive

The Reaper Ascends

ANNEALID
The Earthlings pursued us down every street
They beat us and chained us; forced us down to our knees
Shoved us into crowded cells; unsure of our fate
They kept us in darkness with no food for days
Then we heard the locks disengage
As some of our kin were taken away
Heard their screams
In our minds
On and on
Until they died
Then we heard the door unlock again
We cowered in fear of being next
And through the door of our laboratory prison, a solitary person came
When she stepped into the light, we recognized her face
And in that moment, we knew we were saved
We followed her through darkened tunnels, until we had escaped into the night
Run! Run!
Run for the hills!
Head for the mountains
Dig deeply beneath
As we lived on our home planet
Close to its heat
We'll bathe in the magma
And live in these caves
Where no Earthman can touch us
Here we'll be safe
SCIENTIST
I had made my decision
Sprung the Annealids from their prison
Commandeered a cargo ship and
All the necessary provisions
We fled into the mountainside
For the Annealids to hide
Burrowed deep into the rock beneath
Where the Commander's troops could never reach
COMMANDER
The scientists have fled
All hope is undone
She's freed the Annealids to the very last one
They won't get away with this treasonous deceit
The head of the science branch shall rest at my feet
SCIENTIST
I promised them tranquility
My human race made a liar of me
If I could do it differently
I would have never brought them here with me
(Flute Solo: “The Triumph and Sorrow of Science”)
COMMANDER
Nevermore peaceful shall they sleep, the treacherous swine!
A phantasmagoria of obliteration be thine
We’ll return to their planet before the usurpers
Still ravaged by panic have time to react
We’ll regale them with stories of the first voyagers’
Glorious rise to positions of global respect
Once back on Earth they’ll be greeted
With great adulation, paraded with pomp through the streets
Then back to the lab where we’ll skin them at leisure like sheep

|

COMMANDER
All our fates became as one, beneath this unrelenting sun
If it's either us or them, then without pause I'll choose my brethren
No more call to question why
If we are to survive, the Annealids must die!

ANNEALID
We heard of the commander’s mission
To invade our homeworld and capture our kin
To reap their flesh like a crop from a harvest
We watched from afar as they boarded their death ships
We needed to warn those still left on our our planet
To hide from the Earthmen or their doom would be imminent
Smoke on the horizon from the ignitions
Thousands of vessels equipped for invasion
The scientist helped us to set up communications
To send a distress signal to our distant relations
(Guitar solo #1: “Home Forever Lost?”)
Their ships blazed upwards like white-hot harpoons
Aimed for the heart of our home planet
Will this be their doom?
Be aware the Earthman's lies
Fear the reaper
Be aware the Earthman's scythe
To carve away your hides
Be aware the Earthman comes
Fear the reaper
COMMANDER
Just as the frontiersmen of old, prospectors that panned for gold
We must not harbor reticence, care and mercy get thee hence
At first we thought they might reverse the damage done to planet Earth
But instead they made things worse, blessings turned into a curse
Then they, baptized in the flames, our saviors once again became
Our survival is the test, our fate mandated, manifest
SCIENTIST
The signal that I helped transmit
To the Annealids planet
Will warn them of their destruction
From this corruption
I’m disappointed in my race
Our desire to take and take
I felt the need to make things right
I hope it reaches them in time
(Guitar solo #2 “Attempting Connection”)
(Guitar solo #3 “Transmission Successful”)
ANNEALID DISTRESS SIGNAL
“Dearest kin, you must listen
This is an urgent message of warning
The humans are harvesting!
He's coming for your hides!”

Empyrean Carnage

|

COMMANDER
Goddamnit, we're under attack!
ELDER ANNEALID
We intercepted a distress transmission
We could not allow you to fulfill your mission
You planned to invade an unarmed planet
To obliterate the beings that live within it
You were no match for us!
We had heard the tales of Earthman selfishness
And of their hunger for heartless violence
We had to stop you before you succeeded
Rendering you utterly defeated
You were no match for us!
(Piano solo “The Skies Alight with Violence”)
COMMANDER’S BROADCAST
“People of Earth, this is the voice of your Commander. Our warships have all been scuttled; vanquished and scattered to the far reaches of this galaxy by a foe with a technological prowess that far surpasses our own, and a fleet... a fleet the likes of which I have never before seen.
Citizens of the Interplanetary Republic of Earth, as your leader I have devoted my life to keeping such disasters from our doorstep… but all in vain. In my final act as Commander of Earth's Armies, I implore you now: strengthen whatever defenses we have left and prepare one and all for a fight for existence itself.
The enemy has breached our air-lock. I can hear them in the passage ways. They're at the door…”

Distant Kin
06:36
|
|||
ANNEALID
They descended in ships we had never seen
Except for in some half-forgotten dream
They seemed to know each one of our names
They began speaking to us telepathically
ELDER ANNEALID
Dearest Annealids, we've heard your call
We've come to stop the Earthmen, once and for all
Remember this day, now that you've seen
The confusion, the terror upon their faces
By their depravity
People of Earth, listen to us now
Your reaping will cease, we've destroyed your plow
We've captured your Commander, he is now our prisoner
You are outnumbered, your firepower rendered inferior
We hail from the Galaxy's most powerful nation
We've heard the call of our distant relations
We used this planet for incubation
While we left to build our vast civilizations
We've come for our children!
The children you've stolen!
We've come for our children!
To our future beholden!
You tried to kill them
You tried to skin them
Our Annealid children
Helpless
Now the tables have turned upon their captors
We have saved them all from the reaper's scythe
We have seen all we need to see
Primitive society
Dominating lesser beings
We have seen all we need to see
Man’s inhumanity
Satisfying your own needs
COMMANDER
How were we to know?
Your children seem as beasts of burden to men
And if I thought that it could save our species
I'd do it all over again
ELDER ANNEALID
Reckless
Malice
Thoughtless
Avarice
Careless
Hopeless
Ruthless
Cowardice
Bloodlust
Disgust
Selfish
Foolish
(Guitar solo #4 “Human Nature”)
Hasty
Desperate
Greedy
Petty
Mindless
Feckless
This is justice!
Now we leave the humans to their fate
Reduced their numbers to eliminate
Left them helpless in this sorry state
No God left to save them, it’s too late
Their fleet destroyed, their tech erased
Crawling, pleading, dying, no sympathy
There is only one we wish to save…
COMMANDER
You must be joking!
What could you possibly gain from amnestying this duplicitous bitch?
Do with me what thou wilt, but if you keep this wretch
It's clear to me that tech or not
There's still no curing the plight of fools
Do you think she can be loyal even when she turned her back on her own kind?
If you think she won’t be trouble, then it seems you're even greater fools than I
You may have bested me here today, creature, and savaged my battalions
But we have a saying back here on Earth...
Life finds a way...
SCIENTIST
I cut you apart
Did as I was told
I don't deserve mercy
Human hearts are cold
I accept my fate
I’ll go without a fight
At least I’ll die knowing
I tried to do what was right…
(To be continued…)
